On the Permalink Settings page it states that if you activate any of the settings the .htaccess will be overwritten

What if you already have a .htaccess file with vital info?

Al least one should be allowed to view the content of the file before accepting the permalink settings

Better would be that you were able to edit the file directly from the settings page ...
