I am admin on a very small board and have been asked the question ;

Can I make it so that when a new artical / news / forum posts is made
a group / mass email goes out?

Right now I think that isnt possible but was wondering if there is any
infusion etc that might get close?

Thanks!

There is an infusion called Autonews that was originally set up to do this, however it has not worked right since version 7.01.x I have been using it for a while and I am using 7.02.03 but having problems with sending news, articles but it will send an email if anyone uses the shoutbox. No one on the forum has responded to my requests for help and the author of the infusion has not responded to my emails either.

Search for it and if you can't find it, send me a PM and I will zip up the files I have on my site and send them to you.

OK thanks - in what aspects does it not work correctly?

Actually just thinking - is it possible just to send a mass email at all with no mods / infusions ?

No, it's not

The reason a mass email has never been incorporated into the core is that as your membership gets larger it could cause serious server load issues. Sending a mail out for every article, news item and especially forum posts could cause a lot of traffic.
Don't forget, members can track forum threads of interest and will receive mails for new posts.

There are several ways to notify users of new content, the most obvious being

RSS and there's also Twitterfeed

That assumes large membership - we have 10 staff and there will never be anymore. Can you clue me in on RSS?

Just click the link, download it, read instructions and configure to suit. I've never used it myself so I don't know anymore about it.

It doesn't work (for me at least) if I add a news item. It only works if I someone posts a shout in the shoutbox. At one time it worked as advertised but version 7.01.x changed the code somehow to where it was not working.

Automatic is usually good, however it has been my experience that any form of automatic relating to mass email ends up becoming spam, no matter the intention. Take this example for instance: what "new/change" are you going to consider worthy of email notification. It could be set to just about any action you desire. So an article / news / forum post is created, then posted, then modified five, six, or seven times, possibly with just a simple spelling correction. Should the members be informed, with an email, of every change made? If not, the question again comes into play, at what event do we make notification available. Let me know what you think the event for email should be and we will move forward with formulating a solution.

I have just now seen the post about the autonews infusion, and following up on my last post where I stated that it is not working, I can now state that it is working and has been working just fine on three different sites. If anyone is interested in installing it, I am attaching the zip file to this post and the link for the forum that will help with problems is here..

http://www.php-fusion.dk/forum/viewth...d_id=17479

It may require some tinkering but I believe it is one of the better infusions out there. You can even add what content you want to send emails about.

I am running the infusion on 7.02.07 with no problems. What error messages are you getting? When you first install the infusion, not sending email is checked by default...you have to uncheck it.

Here is a screen shot of my admin settings...perhaps it can help you.

To bypass the obvious, the members that want to receive email notifications have checked the option to receive them in their profiles, right?

As for the shoutbox error msg, you have to infuse shoutbox if it is not already. The version of autonews that I have also sends out emails when a new video is posted.

Yes, I have modded version, i.e. the video option has been added and I was helped by the developer last year. I can send you the code for that but you would need to adapt it to your video infusion.

As for your error msg, add this code to infusion_db.php file under the autonews folder:

if (!defined("DB_SHOUTBOX"))    {   define("DB_SHOUTBOX", DB_PREFIX."shoutbox"); }

I am assuming that you have shoutbox infused in your php-fusion version.

The rest of the problem, I would need to be able to access your admin panel to try to see what/where the problem may be. If you would like me to try, send me a PM with the log in details. I understand if you don't want to, but I don't know how else I might find the problem.

I assume that the Last sched.: j. M G:i shown in your post is the time of the last scheduled sending and if there has been no messages sent, perhaps that is the reason for that code being there?

Here is how my autonews_param.php file looks like:

if (!defined("IN_FUSION")) { die("Access Denied"); }
include INFUSIONS."shoutbox_panel/infusion_db.php";
// You may change these settings

$autonews_params['sendasbcc'] = FALSE;   // TRUE to send as bcc, FALSE to send as to.
                                        // Sending as 'bcc' may fail on some mail servers. Sending as 'to' may take more ressources

$autonews_params['fromemail'] = 'me@yahoo.com';       // Enter email to override using value of settings['siteemail']
$autonews_params['copyemail'] = 'me@hotmail.com';       // Enter email of account to receive visible copy of all mails (in "To:")

$autonews_params['hsgallery'] = FALSE;  // TRUE if hs gallery is used - FALSE otherwise

$autonews_params['cronjob'] = FALSE;    // TRUE if cronjob is used - FALSE otherwise

$autonews_params['html_start'] = '<font face=\'Arial\'>'; // Ending html tags
$autonews_params['html_end'] = '</font>';

Enter email addresses into the fromemail and copyemail settings and see if that helps.
