Override order of news items

Hey everyone,
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I didn't find any thread that addressed this by searching. I'd like to override the order that news items appear. Is there a way to do that? The organization that I set up a site for wants to put certain news items (not just the sticky one) at the top of the news and in order of the date of the various events announced in the news.
