I was messing around in the images/avatars directories of my multi sites (3 of them) 

and suddenly all my users had the same name and avatar. 

What would cause this?

You would need to describe each action taken step by step before I could even start to guess.
Clicking around in folders can not change databases, that is for sure.

Sorry for the late reply. 

I can't remember exactly what I did. I know that I downloaded all the avatars from the ../images/avatars directory into one folder from each multi site. 

I then uploaded that folder to the directories for the avatars and suddenly all my usernames were the same name and avatar. 

That's why we have backups I guess.
